In resort events
HAT started by running avalanche talks in Dicks T Bar in Val d'Isere. These quickly became known as Henry's Avalanche Talk. Running events in resorts remains at the core of what we do.
We are adding more programmes and more resorts. See below for the latest details.

The programmes
Ride Hard Ride Safe - the introduction talk
Learn how you can have more fun in the off-piste by understanding how to stay safe. This talk explains to you how to answer the question - Is it safe out there? As a result you will learn where you can go and when you should go, how to go down or up and how to be well prepared. You can get an idea of the content and see part one of this talk right now, just click here
Price €7.50 on the door (£6 booked online)
Here Henry explains why you should come to a talk and who it is for
Beeper Training
We would argue that it is a bit impolite to ski off-piste with friends, carry all the safety equipment, but have no training in how to use it. If you are wearing a transceiver, then that is a good start. If you are caught, they will be able to find you which is great. But you should be able to return the favour if they suffer an accident.
In this session, you will learn how to be well prepared and use your avalanche safety equipment. This concentrates on the role of the avalanche transceiver plus the shovel and probe. At the end of this session you should be able to recover a victim in around 5 minutes.
If you are a premium member you can learn a lot about this by studying our advanced module before the training. This will help you to get more from the live version.
Price €40 on the day (£35 booked online)
Talk on the snow
Put the lessons of the avalanche talk into practice. Learn the important principles of how to stay safe whilst skiing off-piste. This session consolidates what we teach in the talks and brings it all alive. In one afternoon we will cover the key points of where you go and when and how to go down or up. We will also introduce you to the beeper training (but this session is not sufficient, you need the full session as well to be proficient)
Price €40 on the day (£35 booked online)
Advanced on snow
Develop your understanding of the advanced modules on "Where you go and When" and "How you go Down or Up". This is an afternoon session for people who have done previous programmes with HAT or are doing the full COPE programme or have already done beeper training. You will get far more out of this if you are a club member and have studied our advanced talk modules
Price €40 on the day (£35 booked online)
Cope Certification
COPE is the Certificate of Off Piste Excellence issued by HAT. This is a recognition that you have been trained in the basics of avalanche awareness and safe off piste coduct. It is similar to AIARE level 1. It certifies that you will make a safe and helpful member of any off-piste group.
To get this you need to do the following
- Study the online talk materials (basic and advanced) be a HAT Club member
- Attend a live avalanche talk (or be able to answer questions to demonstrate you have studied the online materials)
- Do a full beeper training
- Attend a COPE on snow afternoon on "Where you go and when" and "How you go down or up"
You can do this all in one week in Val d'Isere
This 1 week programme allows you to do this in the afternoons and evenings so that you can still make the most of each morning and get a good day out on the snow. (with a guide or with your friends)
- 1700 Tuesday at a local venue (to be confirmed)
- 1400 Wednesday - Beeper training
- 1400 Friday - COPE (In depth) on snow afternoon and certificate presentation.
Price is £100 booked online to include club membership for the season. €125 cash paid in resort
