Some Avalanche Activity Today - a sign of things to come

We did get a bit of fresh snow yesterday in the Espace Killy with a lot of wind out of the East/ South East. Perhaps a bit more wind & snow near the Italian border (but even there, just a few cm's). New snow quality was crusty in most places, "skiers snow".

Some current conditions in Northern French Alps

FEb 5 Jean Ribart photo - this totally fresh stuff is around but you need to start walking for it!

Off-piste skiing is awesome as these images attest - still freezing cold for the next week - maybe some snow showers midweek and maybe some proper snow this coming weekend!

BUT

Avalanche rating up to 3 from a 2 in many place in the Northern French Alps for tomorrow

The danger rating is going up mainly due to the following:
* accidental avalanches observed at around 2800 m on north-northwest to west
facing slopes crown lines of 15-30 cm (these accidental tigiggers were mainly in Haute Tare

La Rosiere Local Conditions 04/02/2012

With no guests in for a couple of days I organised to get out early and take a tour up our local peak Mont Valezan. It was bitterly cold with freezing cloud lingering around 1800 - 2000m. The walk up was not so cold as long as you were in the sun.

Implications of colder weather and analysis of slope angles

Its cold!!  I have heard mentions of -30C today, but even if that is exagerated, it's cold.

So what does this mean for us.  Well Henry gave us a run down on what to expect from colder weather in our regular club call last Sunday.  These calls are normally reserved for premium members.  But on this occasion we have released the recording to all our ezine readers.

Interesting tranceiver practice article

just reading this interesting article on training /practice on the Piste hors website. The comments on the problems with a deep burial (150cm) in old avalanche debris and multiple searchers / team organisation are enlightening. I would be interested in what others think about the views on different makes or ages of tranceivers used?. http://pistehors.com/news/forums/viewthread/1149/
